Low ink levels and printer performance issues
Your Canon printer may start experiencing performance issues once the waste ink absorber becomes full or nears capacity. This can be seen in the form of error messages, reduced print quality, and sometimes, the printer may even stop working.
What are waste ink absorbers?
Inkjet printers use liquid ink that is sprayed onto paper during the printing process. The ink cartridges used in these printers contain both ink and air. Whenever a print job is initiated, the printer generates negative pressure to draw ink out of the cartridge and onto the paper. During this process, small amounts of air are drawn into the cartridge as well. Over time, tiny ink droplets and air are collected in a sponge-like material called a waste ink absorber, also known as a maintenance box.
Why clean the waste ink absorber?
The waste ink absorber in your Canon printer doesn't last forever. Once it becomes saturated, it can cause ink to leak out of your printer onto your desk, ink-smudged prints, and even printer failure. Therefore, cleaning the waste ink absorber is essential for the longevity of your printer, ensuring it functions at its optimal capacity and produces high-quality prints for as long as possible.
Cleaning your Canon printer's waste ink absorber
Cleaning the waste ink absorber on your Canon printer is a simple process that can be done in a few steps.
Step 1: Remove and clean the absorber
Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, and open the printer cover. Look for the waste ink absorber, which is typically located on the right-hand side of the printer. Carefully remove it and place it on a clean, flat surface away from direct sunlight.
Gently clean the absorber with a clean, damp cloth. Be careful not to put too much pressure on it as this may damage it.
Step 2: Clean the waste ink container
The waste ink container is where any excess ink from the absorber filters through. To access it, remove the plastic cover that sits towards the back of the printer and on top of the waste ink container.
Use a clean, damp cloth to gently clean the inside of the container and the plastic cover. Once done, put the cover back in place.
Step 3: Reinstall the cleaned waste ink absorber
Replace the cleaned waste ink absorber in its proper position and close the printer cover. Plug your printer back in and turn it on. Your printer should now function normally.
If you find that your printer is still giving you issues after completing these steps, you may want to consider taking it to a professional for further cleaning or repair. Alternatively, you could purchase a new waste ink absorber from Canon and replace it yourself, ensuring that your printer functions optimally for years to come.
The Final Word
Canon printers are designed to last, but your printer's waste ink absorber will eventually fill up, leading to performance issues. Cleaning the waste ink absorber is relatively easy and can be done at home with minimal fuss. However, if you find that your printer continues to malfunction, it's advisable to take it to a professional for further assistance.
